Companionship Care at Home
More company, shared interests and practical support – without leaving the home you love.
What Is Companionship Care at Home?
Companionship care brings social connection and everyday assistance to someone who would welcome more support in their own home. It can mean sharing conversations and meals, continuing favourite interests, preparing for appointments or having help with tasks that have become harder to manage alone.
With Live In Care Ltd, companionship is provided through a fully managed live-in arrangement. A carefully matched carer lives in the property and gets to know the person’s routine, rather than attending only for a short scheduled visit. Our care team assesses the proposed support, develops the care plan and remains involved after care begins.
The purpose is not to fill every hour or take over the household. Some people enjoy lively conversation and activities; others prefer quieter company and time to themselves. You remain involved in the choices that make the day your own, including what you eat, how you spend your time and which tasks you wish to continue independently.
What Can a Live-In Companion Help With?
The everyday moments often matter most: having someone to cook with, discussing the news or looking forward to an activity together. A live-in companion can offer attentive company alongside practical assistance, with support organised around the person rather than a standard activity list.
Shared interests might include gardening, painting, listening to music, reading or completing a puzzle. A carer may also help with planning and preparing meals, shopping arrangements, light housekeeping and laundry. You can remain involved in the tasks you enjoy, while receiving assistance with those that have become tiring or difficult.
Keeping existing relationships going is equally important. Support may include helping with a video call, preparing for visitors or accompanying someone to an agreed appointment or local activity. We can also discuss manageable pet-care routines where appropriate. The care plan sets out what is included, with any personal care, medication support or additional assistance assessed separately rather than assumed to form part of companionship alone.
Supporting Families Without Replacing Family Life
Relatives often want to remain closely involved while stepping back from the constant organisation of meals, errands and daily assistance. Managed companionship care can help share those responsibilities without making family members feel excluded from the person’s life.
Before care begins, we discuss what help is already in place and what relatives would like to continue doing. You might still take your parent to a favourite café, visit at weekends or attend important appointments, while the carer provides the agreed support at other times.
Communication is arranged around the person’s wishes, consent and any relevant authority. Our care team remains a point of contact for questions and concerns, so relatives do not have to manage the placement themselves. The aim is to create more space for being a family, rather than making every conversation about the next care task.
From our Taunton head office, we arrange live-in care across England, including Somerset, Devon and Dorset. Explore our live-in care locations or contact us about the area where support is needed.
When Could Live-In Companionship Be the Right Choice?
Live-in companionship may be worth exploring when someone wants to remain at home but would welcome more company and practical assistance throughout the day. Perhaps meals have become less enjoyable alone, a favourite interest has slipped away, or getting ready to go out now feels like a bigger undertaking.
Support can help make chosen outings more manageable, whether that means preparing for an appointment, meeting a friend or visiting a local group. We consider mobility, energy, accessibility and suitable transport before agreeing what can be provided. A carer driving is not automatically included in every placement, and staying at home with good company can be just as valuable as going out.
Not everyone seeking more company needs a live-in arrangement. When occasional conversation or a social activity is the main requirement, community groups or Age UK’s friendship services may provide another starting point. We discuss whether our service is proportionate to the person’s needs and preferences, rather than assuming that live-in care is always the answer.
Why Families Choose Live In Care for Companionship
Live In Care Ltd is a family-run business based in Taunton, providing fully managed live-in care across England. We have specialised in live-in care since 2014 and are a Care Quality Commission-regulated provider.
Matching involves more than finding someone available on the required date. We consider the experience needed, communication, daily habits, interests and how the person feels about sharing their home. Their preferences remain part of the discussion, helping us identify a carer whose approach could suit the household.
Our involvement continues after the carer arrives. We review the arrangement, respond to concerns and plan handovers when carers change. Where needs develop beyond the original companionship plan, we assess the additional assistance required rather than assuming that the existing arrangement will cover everything.

FAQs About Companionship Care at Home
Can I arrange companionship without needing help with washing or dressing?
Yes. You can discuss a companionship-focused arrangement even when you still manage your own personal care. We consider the company and practical assistance you would value, alongside whether a live-in placement is appropriate. Our explanation of what Live In Care involves can help you understand the arrangement. Any additional personal care or medication support would need to be assessed and included in the agreed care plan.
Do you offer companionship as short hourly visits?
The service described here is live-in companionship, with a carer living in the home and providing agreed support. It is not an hourly visiting or telephone-befriending service. During the care assessment and planning process, we discuss whether that level of involvement suits the person or whether a less extensive arrangement would better match what they need.
Will I still have privacy, and what accommodation does the carer need?
Yes. Your preferences about quiet time, visitors and private conversations should be discussed before care begins. You do not have to entertain the carer or take part in activities you do not enjoy. The carer needs a suitable private bedroom, access to household facilities and agreed breaks. Our guide to how Live In Care works explains the practical arrangements, including planning any support needed while the carer is taking a break.
Will my live-in companion be awake and available throughout the night?
No. One carer does not work continuously through every day and night. Live-in carers need appropriate breaks and sleep, so we assess overnight assistance separately. Frequent or prolonged night-time needs may require additional staffing rather than relying on the daytime carer to remain awake. Our Overnight Care at Home page explains why these requirements need to be discussed before care begins.
What happens if the carer does not feel like the right match?
Tell our care team what is not working, whether it concerns communication, routines or how support is being offered. We will discuss the concern and the appropriate next steps, which may include reviewing the care plan or considering a different match. You can contact Live In Care rather than feeling you must resolve difficulties within the household on your own.
What if my parent says they do not need a carer?
Start with what they would welcome, rather than a list of things you believe they can no longer manage. They may value company when preparing meals or help continuing an interest while remaining independent in other areas. Our Elderly Live In Care service is planned around the individual. Their wishes and involvement should remain central to any discussion about introducing support.
Can companionship form part of dementia care at home?
Yes, companionship can be included within an assessed dementia-care arrangement. Shared interests, familiar conversation and appropriately chosen activities may sit alongside help with meals, personal care or daily routines. We consider communication, supervision and other support needs rather than treating companionship as sufficient for everyone. Our Live In Dementia Care page explains the wider service.
Can companionship care be arranged while a family carer takes a break?
A planned period of Live In Respite Care may include companionship and practical assistance while the usual family carer rests or is away. We discuss the dates, daily routines and tasks that need covering. Suitability and carer availability must be confirmed before the arrangement is relied upon, and any extension would need to be agreed separately.
Can a couple receive live-in companionship together?
Yes, where a suitable arrangement can meet both partners’ needs. One person might mainly want company and help with meals, while the other needs additional assistance. We assess each partner separately before considering the combined support, including whether they need help at the same time. Live In Care for Couples is planned around the household; one carer is not automatically assumed to be sufficient.
How do we get a price for companionship care?
Contact us with an outline of the person’s situation and the support being considered. We can discuss an initial estimate, with the proposed fee confirmed following assessment. The quote reflects the actual live-in arrangement rather than a standard hourly companionship rate. Our guide to Live In Care costs provides current pricing information and explains factors that can affect the total, including additional overnight assistance and support for a couple.
The impact that Anna has made on the health and wellbeing for Mum and Dad has been staggering. Dad, who never gives praise easily, has described her as marvellous.
Mum’s carers have become part of the family, they’ve gotten to know Mum and her needs so well and are exactly what the family were hoping for and more.
The service is professional, efficient, friendly, and respectful. Nothing appears too much trouble. They made a prompt and accurate assessment of my mother’s needs and quickly identified a fantastic carer. When they had concerns about my mother’s health the service manager made a personal visit to check that everything was being done that needed to be done.
Thank you, Live in Care, for enabling Mum to spend her last day at home, where she wanted to be. This has been a great comfort to us all and we couldn’t have asked for better care in the last few weeks.
Live in Care – thank you, thank you, thank you! You’ve changed my parents lives; Mum is less stressed knowing Dad is cared for and they can carry on living at home together.
